WELSH LANGUAGE EXCHANGE TRANSITION PROJECT BRIEF

(idea provided by Medi James - Pontnewydd Primary, Torfaen)

Video conference objectives

  • To introduce both classes and teachers to each other.
  • Teachers and pupils get used to linking via webcam.
  • Children increase their confidence in speaking and listening in welsh.
  • Gain links with comprehensive school to assist a smooth transition from Y6–Y7.
  • Evaluate the video conference and feedback the potential for future half termly conferences.

Proposed activity.

Primary pupils ask year 7 pupils;

  • Beth yw d’enw di?
  • Ble rwyt t’in byw?
  • Faint ydy dy oed di?
  • Pa liw ydy yd wallt di?
  • Beth yw enw d’ ysgol di?
  • Beth yw enw’r athraves?
  • Beth yw enw’r pennaeth?
  • Oes brawd da ti?
  • Oes chwaer da ti?
  • Beth wyt ti’n hoffi wneud?

Secondary pupils can then ask the same questions to Primary pupils.

This can be done in a hot seating format where one child from each school stays in the hot seat for 3 questions and then rotates. Once 9 questions have been asked, the schools swap.  This can continue for the 30 minutes.

If you wish, the conference can take on a quiz format, where the school gains a point for every correct answer.

Prior Preparation

  • Select children who will be put in the hotseat.
  • Ensure your class are aware of the vocabulary required for the conference.
  • Select a score keeper if required.
